Story
Phumie Sibisi’s first cake was for a friend’s baby shower. Besides impressing her friend, she surprised herself with the elegant caramel-chocolate concoction. Little did she know it would be the start of a new and delicious business. One very different to her career in customer service.
With her previous baking experience rising to a single-layered microwave birthday cake, baking wasn’t how Phumie had ever imagined spending her evenings and weekends. But she was hooked.
YouTube, Instagram and Google gave her plenty of ideas and recipes and she quickly expanded her skills. Her son and taster-in-chief was her number one supporter. Word got out in the community, and cake by cake the business grew. Soon she was joined in the kitchen by a friend from church.
A free-styling cook, Phumie was surprised by how much she enjoyed the precision of baking and the creativity of decorating.
“I love making a cake for someone specific. Something that will make their day. There’s a lot of feeling that goes into my cakes. If it’s a wedding cake, I’ll put on the old love jams while I bake. If it’s a teenage birthday I might find myself humming Justin Bieber!”
Plans for the future? Phumie wants to grow the business and share her skills and enthusiasm with the future cake-makers of Langa.
